Food: From Where Does it Come From?

Points to Remember:

We all eat different kinds of food at different times.

There is so much variety in the food that we eat.

A meal consists of chapatti, dal, and brinjal curry. Another maybe rice, sambhar, and a vegetable preparation of lady’s finger. Yet another meal could be appam, fish curry, and vegetables.

Materials required to make different food items are called ingredients.

Only two ingredients rice and water are needed for cooking rice.

Ingredients like milk, water, coffee powder and sugar are required for preparing coffee.

Ingredients like milk, water, tea powder and sugar are required for making tea.

Ingredients like atta and water are required for making the chapati.

Ingredients like pulses, oil, water, salt and spices are required to make daal.

Some ingredients are common for making different food items.

The main sources of food are plants and animals.

Plants are the sources of food, ingredients like grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits.

Animals provide us with milk, meat products and eggs.

Cows, buffaloes and goats are some common animals that give us milk.

Milk and milk products like butter, ghee, cream, cheese and curd are used all over the world.

We eat many leafy vegetables.

We eat fruits of some plants.

Sometimes we eat roots, sometimes stems and even flowers of the plants.

The parts of the plant that we eat are called edible parts of the plants.

Some plants have two or more edible parts. Examples are mustard and banana.

Seeds of the mustard plant give us oil and the leaves are used as a vegetable.

Parts of the banana plants like fruit, flower and stem are used as food.

Bees collect nectar from flowers, convert it into honey and store it in their hives. When we find such a beehive, we collect the food stored by the bees as honey.

Flowers and their nectar may be available only part of the year.

Animals that eat only plants or plant products are called herbivores.

Animals that eat other animals are called carnivores.

Some animals which eat both plants and animals are called omnivores.
